Galle Fort feels different as soon as you enter through the old gate. The traffic becomes quieter. The streets become narrower. White walls, wooden windows and shaded courtyards appear around every corner.
The fort is full of history, but it does not feel like a museum. Families still live here. Children walk home from school. Cafes open inside old buildings and local shops sit beside small galleries. Life carries on inside the walls.
You can see the main streets in a few hours, but there is no reason to rush. Walk without a strict plan. Stop for tea. Follow the sea wall. Come back again when the evening light begins to soften.

The sea is always close.
